What is an extra?

An extra or a background performer is an often mocked figure that lurks in the scenery of a film, movie, television show, commercial or music video.

They’re made up of all walks of life, all ages, all races and most importantly all personalities.

It’s not difficult to become a background performer (as stated, better known as an “extra”) all you need is a clear photo and the ability/desire to work long hours, for little pay – 15% of which will go to your overpaid and underworked agent, and the desire for large quantities of free muffins and donuts (depending on the production).

Broken English Films have had long running ties with Background Performers (Extras) for many years, with many of us having been extras on a huge variety of sets. As a result, the mockumentary The Background Performers was born.
