Becoming and being an extra in Vancouver, BC
Funny, I’ve been in and out of this sort of gig for about five years now. Regularly I forget about how little we’re paid… I mean, there’s something about being on set and in front of the camera, meeting new people from all walks of life etc.
But there’s one thing that’s surprising and irritating, something which I’d assume isn’t present in a lot of other jobs; having to call your “boss” or “agent” in order to make sure they remember you and get you work. Now I thought this was just an exaggeration, “I bring them a coffee when I drop by the office” etc. Surprisingly though, they do need reminding that they’ve got you as an employee. You will work to get them money.
Recently a competing extras agency folded, one with the words “key” and “stone” in it’s name. Allegedly the owner took the money and ran before declaring bankruptcy and as a result my agency has absorbed a bunch of their talent. Judging by how much work I’m not getting, my “seniority” (something which definitely doesn’t exist in this line of work) is being pushed aside.
So, if you are an extra, you must whore yourself out. You must shamelessly promote yourself and repeat to your superiors that you are available and willing to work, despite the online calendar they insist you fill out which they seem not to pay attention to.
I’m not complaining though, I love being an extra. Extras don’t complain!
